My days vary depending on what needs to be done. This is a general list of the responsibilities of the Truck 4- B shift Captain as related to the uniforms/PPE and the general responsibilities of a captain.
-Order, track, and maintain an inventory of personal safety equipment (gloves-eye protection-helmets-boots-hoods-etc)
-Order track, and maintain an inventory of flashlights-spanners-hose straps-wedges-door straps-batteries-etc. (These are all tools that are supplied to the firefighters)
-Order, track, size, and issue departmental station uniforms, dress uniforms, turnouts, and brush gear (This includes the different safety gear for structure fires and wildland fires)
-Manage the departmental badge inventory. Issue and track badges, order replacements, and coordinate repairs.
-Authorize the payment of the bills and invoices relating to personal safety equipment and uniform purchases.
-Outfit new members with required uniforms and personal safety equipment.
-Outfit newly promoted members with proper uniform and safety equipment (Captains recieve a red helmet, etc.)
-Oversee the return of department issued equipment and clothing from retiring members. (When you retire, you can't keep your gear)
-Manage the repair of turnouts and brush gear.
-Track the departmental ID cards
-Supervise the shift master mechanic and assist the equipment mechanic as needed
-Support the mechanical division with ongoing projects and repairs in the shop.
-Support the building and grounds division with ongoing projects and repairs. (We do a lot of our own repairs)
-Point of contact for new building and mechanical issues that arise during the shift (The 48 hours of B-shift)
-Supervise the ongoing training of the probationary firefighter assigned to my crew. Documenting their progress with D.O.R.'s (Daily Observance Reports) and daily proficiency drills.
-Supervise the ongoing training of my crew in truck company operations, relief driver training, succession/promotional training, and other career development activities.
-Annual performance evaluations of my crew
-Handle accident reports/documentation involving my crew and Truck 4
-Fire prevention inspections
-EMT CE (Emergency Medical Technician Continued Education)
-Haz Mat CE (Hazardous Material Continued Education)
-Write and enter fire reports
